This last week Grumpy went out to check on our beehives and a bit of the honeycomb broke off from one of the bars...so we are getting our first taste of Wonder Why Honey. Now you know that I refer to my kids as Brother Bear and Sister Bear so when they had their first opportunity to delve into the sweet taste of our very own honey, visions of Winnie the Pooh ran through my head.
I wanted Grumpy to get a photo of the inside of the hive so I could share it but he ended up having his hands full...of honeycomb. Hopefully next time. He did report that one of our colonies no longer exists in their home. Maybe they made a home in our woods or marsh and we can one day find their swarm but the likelihood is slim. The bees we do have are very busy though. We don't intend to collect this fall just so they have plenty of food for Winter which means we will have lots to harvest next Spring.
What we did collect was absolutely delicious! Grumpy has figured out a great way to get the honey out of the wax so now I need to figure out what to do with the wax. Candles in my spare time?
